What is Mental Health?

Recently I posted a video on my facebook and instagram looking for peoples' descriptions of mental health. Not just illness but mental health as a whole. I'm very lucky to have received feedback from mental health nurses, fitness professionals, people who have experienced mental health problems along with friends and family. Some are things people have heard in podcasts or from talks and others their own personal feelings. If you have anything you feel you would like to add to this please comment below or email me at amelia.gourlay1@gmail.com I hope that some of these statements can help others understand what mental health is allowing them to talk more openly about it. Feel free to leave any comments below. Mental health, to me is feeling content; mind, body and spirit. To be comfortable in the skin you’re in and appreciate your body and mind for all it is and all it does for you. To me, mental health is what it is to be unique, to be yourself, to be human. To me mental

When is it the right time to get help?

This was a requested blog post so I hope I can help answer any thoughts you are having. When is it the right time to get help? Well for everyone the time is different. For most people I feel the best time to get help is when you realise that this isn't the life you want to live anymore and you want to get better. In some cases the time to get help might be when you feel like you cant go on. Now you might be thinking "why not just when you know you have a problem?" In my experience (and remember these blogs are simply my opinion not medical advice) whenever I have looked for help but deep down not wanted to get better it didn't make a difference. I would go to counselling or talk to my friends but I would always take a step backwards in my recovery and end up lying to people. The only time that doctors or any form of help have actually helped me was when I wanted to be helped. Now in some cases I feel that help will be needed when you are not ready to get better and

When you don't feel like getting up, moving, eating or drinking the last thing you want to do is cook. Your body needs fuel to keep going and sometimes good food can put a little smile on your face when you felt like all hope was lost. I know personally if there isn't something there to grab I might not eat all day or order something in thats expensive and definitely not good for me. So what can you do to help yourself? Find a food you like, bulk cook it and freeze! So when you’re not feeling like you can, you already did. This has really helped me because I can just chuck food I've already made in the microwave and enjoy without the fuss. It can be as healthy or unhealthy as you like but I find that something warm, healthy and filling is the best way to go. Here are some simple recipes that I love. They are both by Ashy Bines' (love to the gal) in her new years day on a plate video. I have changed them up a bit to my taste so hope you enjoy and let me know your

Self Care; wise words

Self care isn't always Lush bath bombs and pamper days. Its making sure you get your tea while its still hot rather than rushing about after everyone else, making sure you get that 8 hours sleep you need or even just having that five seconds to breathe. When you have a caring mentality it can be hard to realise that the person you should be caring about the most is yourself. If you start falling apart how are you meant to help others? Recently I was told that I am drawn towards people who need support and guidance and give my all helping them become the person they deserve to be. This was such a beautiful thing to hear however that wasn't their final point. They went on to tell me that sometimes I give too much and this can negatively effect my own mental health and in many cases my financial status. Its horrible to think that sometimes you need to take a step back from others and look after yourself. To go back to my previous point, when you're at your lowest you won&#

Welcome to my headspace!

Hello guys, First things first I wanted to cover some of the basics; who am I, what this headspace is, why I have created it! Well I am Amelia, currently a student of Child and Youth studies, a gym goer, avid TED talk/radio listener and working mum of two beautiful huskies. I am part of a loving family who has greatly supported me and helped me to become the person I am today. I will share my story in a bit more detail below later. So this headspace is just someplace for me to talk about subjects I am interested in and hopefully help others to branch out and learn new things. I will also talk about mental health and my journey with it. Hopefully uploading some videos/vlogs also if I can figure out how to do it! My main goal is to show people what living with mental health can be like and to help stop the stigma mental health currently holds. I know I cant end the discrimination with one small blog but if I can just help one person my job will be done! Now the part about why I
